What is a Cylinder Liner?

The piston runs in a cylinder liner, a thin-walled rigid metal cylinder placed into the cylinder block of an engine.

The significant working portion of a reciprocating engine or pump is the cylinder liner, the space in which a piston travels.

Cylinder liners provide the following purposes:

1. Sliding Surface Formation

The cylinder liner, which serves as the cylinder’s inner wall, provides a sliding surface for the piston rings while also keeping the lubrication. 

The significant characteristic of the sliding surface and these four necessary points are the most crucial functions of cylinder liners.

  • Anti-galling qualities are excellent.
  • The cylinder lining will last longer.
  • Minor wear on the partner piston ring.
  • Less lubricant consumption.

2. Transfer of Heat

The cylinder liner receives combustion heat through the piston and piston rings and disperses it to the coolant.

3. Gas Compression Sealing

The cylinder liner keeps pressurised gas and combustion gas from escaping into the atmosphere.

A cylinder liner that is difficult to change by high pressure and high temperature is required in the cylinder.

Causes for Cylinder Liner Crack

Inadequate cooling, faulty piston or pistons, wrong installation, foreign bodies in the combustion area, or erosion and corrosion can cause cylinder liners to crack. 

Improper cooling, usually caused by a lack of cooling passageways, can result in hot patches in the liners, leading to liner collapse due to thermal stress. 

Clean contact surfaces between the liners and the cylinder block are required in dry liners to transfer heat efficiently.

If a liner is not inserted correctly, it might cause distortion, wear, or fracture. Metal chips, nicks, or burrs, as well as incorrect fillets and collar undercuts, can cause inappropriate liner seating.

Dirt particles between these surfaces create air gaps, which are poor heat conductors. Heat is also resisted by oil or grease films on these mating surfaces.

Symptoms of cylinder liner crack

1. Oil in Antifreeze

Oil in antifreeze is a common indication of cracked engine cylinder liners. Antifreeze and oil are circulated through their respective circuits inside the engine block, and in some locations, these passageways run very close to each other. Oil can mingle with antifreeze and pollute it if there is a crack inside the engine block at such a location. 

When the radiator cap is removed from the engine, you can readily determine the condition. Don’t forget to check the state of the antifreeze to ensure that the problem is resolved.

2. Antifreeze in oil

This is one of the more common leaks. It can be seen when your oil is a bright orange or has a chemical odour. This is an indication that something in the engine is leaking into the oil, which could mean that the cylinder liner is cracked and there’s coolant in your oil.

3. Low Engine Compression

Engine compression is contained within the main engine block’s cylinders. Cracked Engine Cylinder Liners always have lower engine compression than regular cylinder liners, which results in poor engine performance.

4. Visual Crack Inside a Block

You will detect a visual crack inside the engine block during a standard inspection. You can immediately spot large cracks and also address tiny fractures because they can cause a significant mess. Cracking can also lead to overheating and, as a result, a reduction in optimised performance.
